The conversation began one Saturday morning while some members and staff of Pierre First UMC were enjoying pancakes with PAWS animal rescue of Pierre. They asked the question of what would it look like to partner with PAWS for a blessing of the animals service. PAWS said that they were interested and would be happy to work together.
Pastor Peggy Stempson, Pierre First UMC, shared the idea with some church members, a donation was made to have pet bandanas ordered with The First United Methodist Church of Pierre and PAWS imprinted on them. Members set the date, time and location, and flyers and advertising began.
On Saturday, September 24, Pierre First UMC members set up a canopy, used a sign to say where they were, and waited. They had made homemade chocolate chip cookies for the humans, and treats for the furry friends, including milk bones, cat treats and carrots. Shortly after 3 p.m. folks from the church, folks from the community, and even a bus from PAWS arrived. They all gathered in a time of worship and blessing. There were about 50 people at the event. The Pierre First UMC members had the privilege of blessing 24 dogs, 4 cats, 1 bunny, and 1 pet rock. They even had three cats that were blessed via toys and picture – including a woman’s cat in Virginia who had heard about the event and contacted the organizers. Each pet was blessed by name, as the organizers said, “May this blessing from Christ fill you with life, bind you to your human companions (and future human companions) and lead you to praise your creator. Amen.”
Pet owners told stories of their mostly furry friends – how they had encountered tough times, health scares and been companions through challenges and joy. It was a holy and sacred moment to witness as they shared.
Pastor Peggy Stempson said, “It was truly a joy and honor to participate in this service, and the combined group is already making plans for next year!” Photo: Kids at the blessing of the pets service showed off their pet's new bandanas.
