Do you know about the United Methodist Committee on DisAbility Ministries? At this year’s General Conference, the ten-year old Disabilities Task Force gained status as a committee.
Look for posts with opportunities for you and your church to open hearts, minds and doors to people of all abilities every other month. This month, please take a look at accessibility. The Book of Discipline (139) mandates that we be inclusive. Further, Paragraph 2352 requires every church to conduct an annual Accessibility Audit. It won’t take a lot of time, and church members can conduct it. Visit sample audits. (http://www.umdisabilityministries.org/2410.html)
If your New Year’s resolution includes learning, consider getting Professional Certification. There is a new certificate in Ministry with People with Disabilities. Certification includes five courses to add to your personal experiences. Learn more at United Theological Seminary
“God sees individuals with gifts, while humans often focus on limitations and fail to understand God's will,” says Chairperson Deb Wade of the North Alabama Conference. She works with Pat Magyar, the GBGM UMCOR liaison to the committee, and national representatives. Terry McDorman (North Illinois conference), and I represent the North Central Jurisdiction. Please contact me if you have questions and suggestions for our jurisdiction.
