“What made him Moses,” Barbara Brown Taylor once wrote, “was his willingness to turn aside.” When I think about this familiar story I sometimes wonder, what if Moses had received a text right before he came upon that lit-up bush? Would he have looked up? Or what if Moses had been running late for an appointment? Would he have kept going and missed the message that would change his life forever?
Our world tells you that if you want to be successful, then stay the course, put your blinders on and don't look back. Update your status along the way, but don't stop until you reach your destination. Yet God's call often presents itself most clearly when we make the choice to go off the beaten path, to try something new, to let our minds and hearts wander, to observe stillness in the midst of everyday chaos. Extraordinary things happen when people stop to pay attention to God's creative and mysterious presence.
