First United Methodist Church in Fargo, North Dakota, gathered 2.77 tons of food for the Minnesota FoodShare, a community resource in the Fargo-Moorhead area.
Each March, First UMC participates in a campaign to collect food items and cash donations. The Minnesota FoodShare March campaign is the largest grassroots food and fund drive in the state, accomplished by participating groups and individuals engaged in the fight against hunger in support of our 300 partner food shelves.
This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak and the increased need, the campaign was extended through April. The campaign effort doubles through Minnesota FoodShare's sponsors and major supporters. So, for every pound and dollar collected, the total is multiplied by twice the amount.
In previous years, First UMC has averaged gifts ranging from 800 pounds of food to 1,000 pounds or one ton. The congregation set a big goal this year to collect 2,020 pounds of food.
The totals are in, and the generous, faithful members of the congregation donated:
1776 pounds of food and $1,720 in cash donations, which will purchase 994 pounds of food, estimated at a cost of $1.73 per pound of food.
So the congregation's total with the donations of food and money is 2,770 pounds donated by First UMC to the Emergency Food Pantry of the Fargo-Moorhead area.
The total of 2,770 pounds doubles through the Minnesota FoodShare's sponsors and major supporters. The total impact is 5,540 pounds of food or 2.77 tons.
