Honor your Mom by empowering somebody else’s Mother

Mother's Day is just around the corner. Solar Oven Partners (SOP) invites you to consider a unique and meaningful gift this year as a way to honor or remember your mother--or any special woman in your life.  Simply give one of our solar cooking seminar graduates the utensils she needs to make healthy meals for her family in her new solar oven.

Haitian teacher Raymonde Joseph demonstrates a reusable Water Pasteurization Indicator (WAPI). It uses the simple technology of melted soy wax to indicate when liquids have reached a high enough temperature to kill bacteria, protozoa and other pathogens, thus helping women protect their families from dysentery, fever, cholera and more.

For $30, you can provide the complete kit of items included with each solar oven that includes:

  • Three 4-quart covered cooking pots

  • French bread pan with black cover cloth

  • Measuring cups and spoons

  • Oven thermometer

  • Solar Oven recipe book, and most important, a

  • WAPI  (Water Pasteurization Indicator).

“The new graduates of our solar cooking seminars are so excited about the ability to bake fruit cakes, muffins or ponmkèt, French bread and more,” says Cathy Hoss, SOP’s Associate Director. “This isn’t something they can do over a charcoal fire”.

Indeed, half of the Recipe Book that is included with the solar oven kits is dedicated to new solar baked recipes.  “Some resourceful women have started selling baked goods from their ovens at the market to augment their families' incomes. The extra money allows them to purchase more nutritious food or send a child to school.

The 4-qt pots are perfect for rice and beans, soups, stews, fish, pasta, meats and even bread.  An oven full of three roasters can easily feed a family or extended family of 10-12 people.
