To the two disciples, this might have seemed like a strange request. But they heard a flesh-and-blood Jesus with their own ears, so it was clear to them who was speaking.
We, who can hear Jesus with our hearts but not usually with our ears, face another layer of questions: Is the voice I hear — or the nudging I feel — really from God? And if so, am I going to do what God asks?
I was at a teen camp a few summers ago by a lake. One of the girls was transferring to a new school because she wanted a new beginning — fewer drugs, fewer stereotypes. But her only clothes fit the stereotype of her old life. I thought that God wanted us to help her buy new clothes, but I was uncertain. Was what I felt in my heart really from God? So I said to God, “I can’t figure this out. If you want me to help her, then make it clear by having me bump into her.” And God did.
