Gifts galore, smiles, quilts and turkey were all part of the scene at Spirit Lake Ministry Center. "We are so glad you are here," Mike and Libby Flowers said as over 65 guests attended the festivities. It was the second annual Christmas party held at Spirit Lake Ministry Center.
Mike and Libby Flowers, co-directors at Spirit Lake Ministry Center, spend weeks preparing for the gathering. They gather turkeys, cook them and get all the groceries several days before the Christmas get together.
Everyone who comes to the party will receive gifts. The gifts have come from donations from churches and businesses. There are toys, small appliances, household items and quilts. "We gave away over 100 quilts and many, many gifts for children and adults alike," said Mike Flowers.
Libby Flowers spends the entire day before the event preparing all the side dishes. Why go to so much trouble? "We have been here for nine years now. These people are our family," said Mike Flowers. "We want to give back to them."
"For some people who come, this will be the only Christmas they know," said Libby Flowers. "It is a lot of work but it brings a lot of joy."
"It is so much fun to come," said one mom who attended. "This is such a welcoming place. Mike and Libby are there for us. We are thankful for this place."
In one night there were 75 pounds of turkey, 40 pounds of mashed potatoes, 30 boxes of stuffing, five pounds of corn and 144 cookies that were consumed or sent home. There was nothing left but joy and warm hearts.
