A new sign catches the attention of everyone that drives by Southeast Pierre Mission United Methodist Church. Southeast Pierre has been designated as a “mission congregation.”
Members the 21st Session of the Dakotas Annual Conference, held in Rapid City, adopted a new Missional Congregation Support Policy (see page 206 of the 2014 Journal). The policy outlines the areas that shall be considered for support after the Bishop and Cabinet have determined that the congregation fits the definition of a mission congregation.
Pastor Jeri Burns, Southeast Pierre Mission UMC said, “With the blessing of the Conference in being designated the first mission church in South Dakota, we are finding new inspiration and renewal. The long-time, can-do spirit of SE Mission UMC is alive and well.”
The new sign on Park Street in Pierre, South Dakota clearly identifies the church and the community center as a mission congregation. The professionally made sign catches the eyes of those driving by.
“In our money-wise and mission-oriented way, we worked with Pheasantland Industries (an employment training program of the South Dakota Department of Corrections) to create the sign. Church members worked together to place the new sign on the existing posts,” explained Pastor Burns.
Additionally, two bathrooms have refurbished at Southeast Pierre Mission UMC to make them more accessible for those with disabilities. Kerry and Sharla Steever,United Methodists from Rapid City, South Dakota, volunteered time to make the remodeling effort possible. The volunteers help to keep the costs to a minimum. Memorial monies that were left to the church covered the costs of the bathroom remodeling.
“This was a dream of the congregation and came together fast with the need and desire identified. We continue to give thanks to God for all of our blessings and for the many who contribute of their time, talents and resources to share the love of Christ in our Pierre Community,” said Burns.
