Every cook needs a potholder—or two—to protect hands when removing pans from a very hot oven. That’s why Solar Oven Partners (SOP) wants to include two uniformly made pocket potholders with each oven we distribute to our Solar Oven Partners UMC trainees. It’s also why SOP is sending a call-out to become part of our potholder brigade!
There is an immediate need for 300 potholders to send with the SOP December 2-13 mission team to the Dominican Republic.
To ensure that each oven recipient receives the same size, shape and style of potholder, it’s very important that our volunteer sewers follow the SOP potholder pattern. Click here to download a pattern, but feel free to use your choice of cotton prints or your favorite colors.
We need to track numbers in the next 30 days. If an individual, church or organization will commit to sewing potholders, please contact SOP Director Rick Jost (rjost@brookings.net or 605-692-3391) and state the number of potholders they are willing to sew and the date Rick can expect them to be delivered to SOP.
A total of 4,000 potholders are needed, so “contracting” these potholders will help us track progress toward our annual goal.
If you’d like to be part of this sewing ministry we’d love to have you on the team. Just print out our pattern, get the necessary materials, warm up your sewing machine and give Rick Jost a call or shoot him an e-mail <rjost@brookings.net>. Sewers, let’s get busy!

Several other United Methodist Women’s work groups have received the pattern designed by SOP Board member Gloria Borgman. Can you help SOP have 300 potholders ready by Nov. 25? Photo by Karen Workman.
